Category filter
Hi! Why does the -onlyfilter-command filter out Category:1865 deaths and other Category:Deaths by year? See this for example. //moralist (talk) 09:39, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Category:1865 deaths -> Category:Abraham Lincoln -> Category:Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Multichill (talk) 10:11, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, thanks for the answer. //moralist (talk) 10:52, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
populate category.js
Tried it. Good. 200% successful- looked again 300% successful. When you have run it Firefox 3.0.3 XP /3Beta5 on Ubuntu- and click on back-a-page button, it reruns it, so you have two message boxes on the page, click the back button again and you have three.
Which leads to my next point. Can you bot be changed, to process multiple Populate categorys on the same category, at the same time. Yes, its Poland again. Often there will be a category for a gmina (district) with no images in but 4 galleries each with the name of a village. It would be more efficient to do all four at the same time- rather than coming back 4 times at hourly intervals. Another example is streets in Berlin-Mitte- yes one gallery for each street!

Bot missed images

Skipping population bot
Hi Multichill, is there any way we can signal the population template not to execute in a gallery. I am thinking on oversigth galleries, such as atlas and cases like Category:Canada Post east coast plants. --Foroa (talk) 06:40, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, you have to explain yourself. Hmm, it looks like WayneRay is destroying categories again btw. Multichill (talk) 08:57, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- I was merely thinking on a situation where the populater was run on global galleries such as Atlases, general overviews (art, paintings, architecture styles) ... and such as between Category:Bruges and Brugge, Category:Cologne and Köln, Category:Squares in Cologne and Neumarkt (Köln). ...
- I think that there should be some system to protect to limit possible damage, although I am not sure what the damage can be. --Foroa (talk) 09:31, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- Damage? Take for example Category:Cologne. My bot put 149 uncategorized images in there and than someone diffused the category, seems ok to me. The bot only touches uncategorized images and images in the direct parent categories (Municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Cities by the Rhine & Rhein-Ruhr in this case) anyway, this limits any serious errors. Multichill (talk) 09:47, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed, if the recategorisation is constrained, risks on damage should be minimal when the specified gallery effectively belongs to the category (might be checked ? What happens if a vandal does a populate with Category:Bruges and gallery Köln ?). --Foroa (talk) 10:34, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- The uncategorized files in Köln will be placed in Category:Bruges. Multichill (talk) 10:36, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- More precisely: the uncategorised files tagges with Media needing categories..." which is a temporary template, so the risk is even smaller. Havang(nl) (talk) 11:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

- However, an unforeseen effect in case of redundant categories here: Category:Tórshavn (the stamps relocated; see also message at User talk:Arne List). Havang(nl) (talk) 12:20, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- I think that the population template should be more selective in recategorisation. In Category:San Lorenzo (Milan), all 14 recategorisations added redundant categories and removed useful categories. I noticed many comparable errors elsewhere too. I would not use the populate template in the Milan related areas as they are very will categorised and the only thing populate can do there is damage. --Foroa (talk) 10:13, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Categoriseren bij botverplaatsingen van nl: naar Commons
Hoi Multichill,
Vriendelijke groeten, Erik1980 (talk) 18:30, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

15:03, 9 October 2008 (hist) (diff) Image:Great Lavra Belltower.jpg 15:03, 9 October 2008 (hist) (diff) Image:Cathedral of the Dormition.JPG
Kiev Pechersk Lavra | Orthodox monasteries in Ukraine | World Heritage Sites in Ukraine
Categories: Religious buildings in Kiev | World Heritage Sites in Ukraine | Baroque art in Ukraine | Orthodox monasteries in Ukraine

Multichill,

Category:Poland, Category:Castles in Lower Silesia, Category:Renaissance castles in Poland, Category:Gmina Leśna, Category:Jizera Mountains
Of Wiki Goeroe!
Multichill (talk) 18:19, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Multichill (talk) 19:00, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Soko deletions
Maybe you could help me to put some pics for deletion: Image:Soko_002.jpg, Image:Soko 003.jpg and Image:Soko 004.jpg. These ones aren't her.. Thanks, and forgive my bad english.. Tarsie (talk) 23:04, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Tarsie, the images all seem to be taken at the same concert see http://flickr.com/photos/eurockeennes/sets/72157606007993881/ . I think those people are part of her band on tour. Deletion is a bit to much, but you might want to alter the description. Multichill (talk) 06:59, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yep, but I don't know who the hell are that people.. What should I write? Can I let the description empty? Thanks, Tarsie (talk) 08:24, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Teaching tool
BotMultichill is a real teaching tool: I have the impression that people follow its system quite well. But there is more to learn: do you see a reason why botM-T didn't categorise at category:Przemyśl fortress and at Category:Przemyśl Fort I "Salis-Soglio", see histories? Is there an effect of time lag? I also had to categorise Przemyśl fortress manually to be able to make cat's for subgalleries. Cheers Havang(nl) (talk) 17:49, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- I think the lag is screwing things up. When the database is back up we can recheck that category. Multichill (talk) 21:56, 18 October 2008 (UTC).
- No need for that, it's all done. Havang(nl) (talk) 09:19, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Wikis Take Manhattan project
Thanks for your ideas; I can see the progress you're making, and I'd also like to play around with these templates further. But I do want to be careful about substituting the descriptions for the moment, because I'm not really sure everything is in the ideal categories yet, and that's why I've made a quick study of AWB, which I hope suffices for now. We should also keep in mind that eventually we want to develop these templates not just for New York events, but as tools that can be easily used by event organizers everywhere. BTW, ideally, we really should try to coordinate these issues at Commons talk:Photo scavenger hunts as we progress. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 01:40, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Hoi,
Groetjes, Sterkebaktalk 15:20, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Zoiets:

Removing images from Category:Chinese kanji stroke order
Your bot added a bunch of previously categorised pages to the category Category:Chinese kanji stroke order. This category was not only unnecessary, but should be empty by definition since there are no Chinese kanji. Kanji are Japanese. Could you please depopulate this category and delete it once that's done. Thanks, --Swift (talk) 04:13, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

salticid cats
hi there,
i'm on spiders for some years now, and am a bit tired of having to clean up the category pages time and again. what's the point of putting *all* salticid pictures into the category Salticidae? we have a very nice taxonomic tree there, that lets you find the pictures, where they are sorted into their respective species gallery pages. the only thing dumping everything into the big cats is to make take forever to load, and to make it almost impossible to find new pictures, that are by default dumped into cats, in order to sort them into galleries. why on earth is it so important for some people to use the cat system in a way that doesn't really work? i'm not aware of any newer "consensus" that was taken on galleries vs. cats, maybe you can point me to some, but i'm really not thinking that you guys are doing the useability any favors here. no intent to bitch on you here personally, i appreciate your work, i'm just really tired of this. cheers! --Sarefo (talk) 14:46, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Sarefo, i'm doing a project to get images categorized. We have about 300.000 uncategorized images atm. Galleries are not replacements for categories, see my archive for all the relevant links. If categories get to crowded (like Category:Salticidae), it's possible to sort the images into subcategories. Just create a category with the exact same name as a gallery and tag it with Populate category. My bot will move all relevant images from the main category to the subcategory. Multichill (talk) 23:30, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Notifying the uploaders...
...is completely pointless. There seems to be a massive increase in the number of drive by single upload accounts (different account - same image). It would seem many people use commons as a free image hosting service (give it a try if you like). If I had access to admin tools - I would be deleting things on-sight because far too much stuff slips through, and if it survives the first 24 hours - it'll be around for months. If I take the time to notify every abusive uploader about every image they upload it would halve the rate I tag things - even more things would slip through. What would be more useful would be a speedy delete notification bot that notified the uploader (not that they would take any notice anyway) - I believe you have skills in that direction.
Ultimately it says it at the bottom of the edit screen "Copyright violations will be deleted!". Megapixie (talk) 12:23, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Running bot1 before botT
Is it possible that at cat's to be populated, your bot tagging media needing categories runs though the gallery before BotMultichillT runs categorising. See Burg Efferen which after 2x sucessfull populate category still contains uncategorised images. -- Havang(nl) (talk) 13:41, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Check the upload dates. The images were uploaded recently. My bot checks new uploads once a day. Multichill (talk) 17:53, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Geotagging tool
Love the new tool you've written — with something as easy to use as that, I'll bet we're going to see geotagging increase impressively. I was wondering if the "heading:" parameter could be added for Commons. And, of course, we need to use this on en.Wikipedia; the template there is en:Template:Coord. Thanks! —Ashanda (talk) 12:09, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'll try to make some changes. What is the standard format at en wikipedia for the Coord template? Multichill (talk) 16:43, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
It's a very flexible template that can accept both decimal or DMS input, whichever is most convenient:

—Ashanda (talk) 10:02, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yep, i noticed that. I dont want to have too many options in the web tool so i probably have to settle for one of these. Which one is it going to be? ;-) Multichill (talk) 11:32, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Numbers 1 and 4 are the useful ones. I suspect 4 will be the most popular, but personally I prefer 1. ClemRutter (talk) 10:17, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Bot doesn't work correctly
Your bot has tagged all images with Template:SVG-Map Africa by Slomox as needing categories. The template automatically includes a category. Please remove the tags and teach your bot to tag only images which really have no categories. --Slomox (talk) 15:41, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- The bot works just fine. I added this user template to my ignore list. Templates shouldnt contain these kind of structures, especially user templates. Please break the category out of the template. If you need some help i can do it for you. Multichill (talk) 16:08, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Such a template is a nightmare if one has to change the category name or structure. --Foroa (talk) 16:55, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- ? If you have to change the category name, it's just one edit to change all images to the correct category. That makes perfectly sense. It's not a user template, it's a template connecting a series of images. --Slomox (talk) 23:27, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- For example, i want to place Image:SVG-Koort Afrika.svg in Category:Blank maps of Africa, please do your one edit. The "by Slomox" part makes it a user template. Multichill (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- You can just insert the string . It will (or would have been) still be in the Category:Maps of Africa, but actually it _is_ a map of Africa. The "by Slomox" doesn't make it a user template. I could have named the template "SVG-Map Africa", but there can be many SVG maps of Africa. I chose a more specific name to make clear it is a _series_ of maps. --Slomox (talk) 02:21, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- For example, i want to place Image:SVG-Koort Afrika.svg in Category:Blank maps of Africa, please do your one edit. The "by Slomox" part makes it a user template. Multichill (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

- There are no policies or guidelines that I can find barring templates from adding categories. --Swift (talk) 04:03, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- It's not barred, but it is bad practice, so dont do it. Multichill (talk) 09:12, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- It's too bad practice to spam images with working categorization with "needs categories" templates. Whether categories in templates are bad practice is not common sense and disputable. It depends on the actual use of the template and the systematics of images and categories. It can make sense under some circumstances and under other circumstances it doesn't make sense. If you have actual evidence, that it doesn't work for a special template, remove the category from the template and add it to the images like you did with my template now. But tagging categorized images as needing categories cannot be the correct solution. --Slomox (talk) 02:21, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Categories build in a template
See at Category talk:GNOME Desktop icons: Categories build in a template have been used there, so Bot1 didn't recognise the cat's already present and botT didn't remove the parent cat's. -- Havang(nl) (talk) 17:17, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Categories added by templates screw up everything..... Multichill (talk) 17:55, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
- Any chance this isn't so much of a problem with the temaplates, but with your bot? --Swift (talk) 04:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- The cat-in-temp-problem existed prior to this botMultichillT, it has always been a problem for cat refinements and there have been lengthy discussions about it, for instance at the Coat of arms tree.Havang(nl) (talk) 13:47, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
deletion of superseded files
Hi there, Multichill. Thanks for the message, but please clarify, what images are you referring to, exactly? Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience. Waldir talk 22:48, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Question
What does supersede mean? Yurte (talk) 14:58, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Deleting a file because a "better" one exists, see Commons:Deletion requests/Superseded. Multichill (talk) 21:59, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Bekend
Hi,
Ciao
